Selected thesis

Digital learning tools and MOOCs have in some shape or form expanded global access to education. While they remove some geographical and financial barriers, questions remain about their accessibility and ability to foster deep engagement and accommodate diverse learners. Do these tools represent a true step toward equitable education, or are they simply a scalable compromise?

Pros

Cons

  • Pro claim 1

Anyone with internet connection and a computer can access at any time.

  • Pro claim 2

It is a step forward to free open learning for all. But of course with limitations.

  • Pro claim 3

MOOCs can allow learners to take classes designed by leaders in the subject of their choosing at a fraction of the price compared to taking the class in an actual in-person setting.

  • Con claim 1

Participation is contingent on a working technology and a foundational level of digital literacy, thereby excluding a certain segment of people.

  • Con claim 2

Language barriers have been mentioned in this course as an issue for MOOCs. Cultural barriers are another issue that can be difficult to address. MOOCs will generally reflect the cultural perspectives of the designer, which may not align with that of the learner.
