Selected claim, supporting its parent

Helots could organise and communicate more effectively than Athenian slaves, making a slave revolt more likely in Sparta than Athens.

Pros

Cons

  • Pro claim 1

Helots were the conquered Greek peoples around Sparta, meaning that they all spoke the same language. Helots could therefore communicate with one another more effectively than Athenian slaves, who were most often barbarians—non-Greeks—who came from many different places and spoke many different languages.

  • Pro claim 2

Helots had their own communities and families, unlike Athenian slaves, giving them more of an ability to organise and revolt.

  • Con claim 1

The fact that the helots could communicate more effectively amongst themselves would not be a sufficient cause for a rebellion.
